Meet the PI
The study principal investigator,
Dr. Godfrey Pearlson grew
up in the northeast of England near Newcastle upon Tyne, (home of
Newcastle Brown Ale), which is notorious as one of the heaviest
alcohol-consuming regions in the United Kingdom. “A pub on every corner,
and the highest alcoholism and cirrhosis rates in England.” The attitude
to drinking there was very different than in Hartford. For example, the
legal drinking age throughout the UK was 18; the student union at the
PI’s college contained 2 bars and the major teaching hospital one, for
the use of the medical students. Guinness was regarded as having
therapeutic and nutritive properties and was routinely given to
postoperative patients to help in their recovery after surgery.
